GOVERNMENT SPENDING

(N.Z. Press Association)

AUCKLAND, March 20.

The Government was trimming the estimates so that Government spending in the next year did not increase by more than about 6 per cent, the Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon) said to the Auckland branch of the Institute of Public Administration today. He said that he and the Minister of Works (Mr Allen) had been looking at departmental proposals and trimming the proposed works programme for the coming year. They had assessed the priorities and trimmed the total vote so that it would not exceed this sum.

"Although the pace of the economy has quickened in recent months all current action of the Government is designed to ensure that it does not speed up too rapidly,” he said.
