Pope Appeals For Internal Unity
(N.Z.P. A.•Router—Copyright) VATICAN CITY, March 19. Pope Paul said today the Roman Catholic Church needed to be united within itself before it could become united with other Christian churches. With the changes brought about by the 1962-65 Vatican Council, the church’s need for “internal harmony and effective spiritual unity” was felt more deeply than ever before, he said during his St Joseph’s day blessing in St Peter’s Square. The Pope was clearly re-
ferring to the rebellion by some Roman Catholic clergy and lay people against church authority and wide-spread questioning and criticism of traditional beliefs and customs.
“How can the church perforin its apostolic and religious duties if it is torn by Internal disputes?” he asked. “How can it be a missionary without internal cohesion?
“How can it recreate, in an authentic ecumenism, its unity with all its brothers in the name of Christ without the active and submissive interior unity of all those who have the fortune and the responsibility of calling themselves Catholics?'*
