TWO SOLDIERS SENTENCED
Absence Without Leave
Two soldiers at Burnham Military Camp were sentenced to detention by a district court-martial on Wednesday. Private W. T. Temara, of tbe Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, was initially charged with desertion in that he absented himself from Bumham on November 11, 1968, until he gave himself up to the military authorities at Ruatoki on February 11, 1969. Tbe charge of desertion was dropped and one of being absent without leave was substituted. He was sentenced to 50 days detention. Craftsman R. A. Garrett, of the Royal New Zealand Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, was charged with being absent without leave from Burnham from October 7, 1968, until he was arrested in Wellington on February 6, 1969. He was sentenced to 90 days detention. The court comprised Major P. D. R. Browne (president), and Captain G. M. Corkin and Lieutenant R. S. Miller. The judge-advocate was Mr P. G. S. Penlington. Temara was defended by Lieutenant R. N. Upton, and Garrett by Lieutenant R. L. Holes.
Both sentences are subject to confirmation.
