Unemployment Decreases

WELLINGTON, March 19. The number of unemployed registered with the Labour Department dropped by 401 from 3490 at February 28 to 3089 at March 14, the Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) announced today.

Male enrolments dropped from 2487 to 2126 and female registrations from 1003 to 963.

The number of ! men receiving the benefit in Auckland was 374 (461), in Wellington-Lower Hutt 49 (66), in Christchurch 179 (221) and in Dunedin 40 (47). The number of men enrolled in the Auckland district at March 14 was 585, compared with 664 at February 28. In Wellington-Lower Hutt the total was 94 (144), in Christchurch 237 (291) and in Dunedin 54 (79). Men employed on special Government works at March 14 numbered 162, compared with 174 at February 28. Vacancies notified to the department for men numbered 2662 and for women 1094. The corresponding figures at February 28 were 2531 and 1087. The current vacancies included 968 for skilled men and 306 for skilled women.
