LABOURERS TO MEET

Wage-Policy

Talks

(N.Z. Press Association)

AUCKLAND. March 17

Between 2000 and 3000 ] Auckland labourers are expeeled to stop work on April 9 to hear their union’s policy on wage rates and the Court of Arbitration.

The union secretary, Mr H Kay, said today: “We are going to explain how the Court works, as opposed to | direct bargaining.

I “We are no longer prepared to accept minimum [award rates, especially in the [building industry, as the criteria for the future. We want to negotiate directly round [the table with the employers and to use the Court for minimum rates only.” The meeting would also discuss provisions for annual paid sick leave, three weeks annual holiday and an “adequate” wage for a 40-hour week. It would also consider the refusal by the Auckland branch of the General Contractors’ Association to grant a sick-pay claim, affecting 200 Auckland labourers, he said.
