SOCIETY’S NEED

Home For Activities

The most urgent need of the Christchurch Gilbert and Sullivan Society was for a place for the storage of properties, and a suitable home for its activities, said the president (Mr W. G. Agnew) in his report to the society's annual meeting last evening. Properties and other gear were stored at members’ homes, and somewhere to work on costumes and stage sets was needed. A property might have to be rented, leased or purchased, Mr Agnew said.

“The society was able to stage another major production and, while it strained our limited resources, it is most gratifying that it was such a financial and artistic success,” said Mr Agnew. “We were able to show a considerable increase in attendance figures in spite of higher admission charges. “ "The Gondoliers,’ our second production, attracted about 9000 people, and resulted in a satisfactory profit.” Theatre supporters in Can-, terbury expected a very high standard and it was up to the society to maintain and improve this, so that it continued to make a worth-while contribution to the theatre life of the province, Mr Agnew said.

The major production thii year would be “The Yeomen of the Guard” and no effort would be spared to make it a success, said Mr Agnew.
