Fumigation Of Cathedral

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 19. Methyl bromide gas will be pumped into Wellingtonton’s 103-year-old St Paul’s Cathedral on Saturday in an attempt to rid the building of borer. A spokesman for the fumigation contractors described the timber treatment project as “probably

the biggest undertaken in the Southern Hemisphere.” The firm hopes to encase the building in 35,000 square feet of plastic sheeting tomorrow and to pump in a ton of gas on Saturday. The colourless, odourless gas will remain in the cathedral for 24 hours. The cathedral is under the supervision of the Historic Places Trust
