FIVE YEARS IN PRISON
New Sentence On Monk WZ^-4-lUuUr—Copyrtpht) SAIGON, March 17. The militant Buddhist leader. Thick Thien Minh, was today sentenced to five years imprisonment for aiding deserters and draft dodgers. The military court trying the Buddhist monk today said the sentence would run concurrently with a 10-year prison term imposed on him on Saturday for harbouring rebels and keeping illegal documents and weapons. Thich Thien Minh, leader of the militant Buddhists’ youth wing, did not attend today’s hearing In which the fiveman military tribunal took five hours to hear the evidence and decide the sentence.
Observers feared Buddhist demonstrations might follow the trial, but these were not Immediately expected to be serious. Yesterday Buddhist leaders held a prayer meeting for Thich Thien Minh and about 500 militant Buddhists held a protest gathering at the An Quang Pagoda. Remanded.— Edward Henderson Duncan, aged 18, was remanded on bail to March 27 when he appeared before Mr W. Pettigrew, J.P., in the Westport Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of driving under the influence of drink on Saturday.— (F.0.0.R.)
