COUNTRY AND WESTERN CLUB CONCERT

Cowboy ballads and camp fire songs were part of the wide variety of music performed by the Christchurch Country and Western Club last evening. The concert was held in the Foresters’ Hall, and was the club’s first performance this year. Songs ranging from vocal solos by Wendy Brian and Annette Dugan, to hearty cowboy ballads by Colin Wootton were well received by the audience of more than 80. The Mainland Hoedowners started the evening with two fast-moving songs. The wellbalancedharmony of the

quintet made the sound system in the hall unnecessary.

The highlight of the concert was “Love in the Farmyard,” sung by Colin Wootton with George Stewart providing chicken-like squaks which reduced the audience to uncontrolled laughter. Two moving ballads were sung with feeling by Beverley Ancall and Jim Lange. The perfect harmony of their voices won them a hearty reception from the audience. Fifteen-year-old Annette Dugan sang two songs with clarity. Dave Manning was an entertaining compere. He sang “Peace in the Valley” with fitting gentleness.
