Sick Trees
Sir, —Could some competent person explain the reason for the defoliation and apparent death of a considerable number of kowhai trees in the Conway and Hundalee areas? If this infection is likely to spread further afield, what precautions can be taken for protection of such trees in public and private gardens?— Yours, etc., TRAVELLER.
February 2, 1969. [Mr H. H. Wilson, principal forester for the New Zealand Forest Service in Christchurch, replies: “From my knowledge of the trees I would assume the defoliation has been caused by a combination of drought and insect attack. The insect attack would be due to climatic conditions and with better weather the trees should sprout again. Simple insecticides will protect trees in public and private gardens.”]
