Gift Of Land

A Maungaturoto farmer, Mr W. D. S. Collins, has given the Crown four acres of native bush for a scenic reserve. The area includes more than 100 young kauri trees and a number of other native species typical of regenerating Northland forest. The Minister of Lands (Mr Mclntyre) said he had accepted the offer on behalf of the Government, and commended Mr Collins’s public spirit.—(P.A.) Rat Killer Since Christmas an elderly Temuka man has killed 170 rats at the borough rubbish tip. The marksman was doing a good job with his slug gun, Mr P. D. McGillen told a meeting of the Temuka Borough Council. “I would like to see this man supplied with his ammunition,” said the Mayor (Mr C. J. L. Pye). The shooter will be given 80c for every 1000 rounds of ammunition. —(F.0.0.R.). Right Music When the President of Nauru (Mr H. Deßoburt) is bidden farewell at Christchurch Airport on April 3 at the end of his visit to New Zealand he will hear the National Anthem of his island republic played by the Band of the New Zealand Army. If the band had not obtained the anthem it would have played a general salute. However, the Minister of Defence has forwarded the music to Burnham Military Camp where the bandmaster (Warrant Officer L. Mooney) has adapted it for a brass band. The anthem was scored for a military band by the Director of Music of the Royal Australian Air Force (Squadron Leader L. H. Hicks).
