CONVENTION ON SUICIDE
Course Being Planned
A convention on suicide to which all Life Line counsellors, clergy of all denominations and members of the medical profession will be invited, will be held in Christchurch on June 6 and 7. The convention is being planned by the Christchurch Methodist Central Mission, and the Canterbury Mental Health Association has been invited to assist with the planning.
The superintendent of the mission (the Rev. W. E. Falkingham) said yesterday that the purpose of the meeting was to provide a background planning course so that Life Line counsellors could be better equipped to handle calls from potential suicide cases. It would also help to provide education in the community and give the public an insight of the problems associated with suicide, as well as indicate where help could be received for persons who felt that life held nothing for them.
Mr Falkingham said that it was proposed to bring together the most competent persons in the medical and social service field to discuss the problem. As well as lectures, panel and group discussions would be held.
Speakers would include Dr P. McKinnon, of the Otago Medical School, and Dr J. R. E. Dobson, of the Princess Margaret Hospital.
