One of Spain’s leading “progressive” Roman Catholic theologians, Canon Jose (Maria Gonzalez Ruiz, went on (trial behind closed doors at the public order court here yesterday for writing an article about Christianity and revolution.
The Public Prosecutor at the court, which tries political cases, demanded three months imprisonment on charges of publishing “dangerous” material, as well as a fine of 10,000 pesetas. The priest was defended by Professor Poaquin Ruiz Jimenez, once General Franco’s ambassador at the Vatican and a former Education Minister in his Cabinet, who has (since become a Left-wing ‘Roman Catholic opposition leader.
The court's findings were expected to be announced within a few days.
