N.Z. Defence Policy
Sir, —Only a few days ago the Prime Minister was praising the work of the United Nations, but in his latest defence speech no mention is made of that organisation. Regional pacts are undesirable in that they are motivated by self-interest, and it is significant that India, which is in the midst of warring countries, refuses to join any such pact, saying that they tend to worsen any existing trouble. The terms “helping our friends,” “not dragging our feet,” and “helping to shape events” as used by the Prime Minister, are simply a euphemism for going out and killing people. Unfortunately when this involves intervention in a civil war as in Vietnam, it means killing “friends” as well as “enemies.” In this so-called enlightened age there is urgent need for new thinking on defence, and a recommittal to the principles of the United Nations.—Yours, etc., DEMOCRACY.
