Barbadoes Street Motorway
Sir,—Would I be asking too much of the Christchurch Regional Planning Authority to publish the latest map on the proposed Barbadoes Street motorway? Concerned ratepayers, especially the elderly we have contacted, had no idea the objection papers that have to be filled in by March 21 refer to the Barbadoes Street area. We thought it to be about 20 years away.—Yours, etc., J. FOSTER. March 5, 1969. [The City Engineer (Mr P. G. Scoular) replies: “The Christchurch district scheme is currently under review. Notices have been included with rate demands advising ratepayers that they should check the district scheme and there has been a good deal of newspaper publicity. The route of the motorway adjacent to Barbadoes Street is shown on the district scheme maps which may be seen at the City Engineer’s Department, 166 Gloucester Street (where copies may also be bought), and at all public libraries. These maps show the area in which the motorway will lie, but every property shown will not necessarily be affected when the detailed design is done. The Regional Planning Authority will be preparing a descriptive report on the central motorways shortly and this will bring the final plans a stage closer. Present indications are that this motorway will be constructed in the period 1980-85 or a little later.”]
