Governor’s Visit

“The Governor-General (Sir Arthur Porritt) and Lady Porritt will not only be invited to return to Christchurch but we will insist that they do so,” said the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr A. R. Guthrey) on Sunday evening. “We have been delighted that their Excellencies have made Christchurch their home during the last few weeks,” said Mr Guthrey, replying to a letter of thanks from the Governor-General, who left Christchurch yesterday. Mr Guthrey said that their Excellencies “have given our social and civic life a great lift.

“By their example they have reminded us of the importance of high standards — and they have done this in a natural way without undue formality. “We have been delighted by their attendance at so many functions and by their mingling with so many of us. We are especially grateful for their making available the gardens of their residence at ‘Mona Vale’ for a People’s Day and for sharing part of the afternoon with us. “I have been thrilled to listen to Sir Arthur Porritt speaking on many occasions spontaneously, straight from the heart, always with a challenge, and with the courage of his convictions,” said Mr Guthrey. “The visit of. their Excellencies and their enthusiastic support for many of our projects will have a stimulating effect on our community life,” he said.
