DOGS ON BEACHES

Lyttelton Complaint A complaint has been made to the Lyttelton Borough Council about dogs on beaches, especially at Lyttelton and Diamond Harbour. In a letter received at a meeting of the council last evening, Mr J. Ede said that dogs had been prohibited from Brighton, Scarborough and Sumner beaches and suggested it was not unreasonable to ask Lyttelton and Diamond Harbour to maintain similar standards. The writer said that a black dog, minus collar, had recently been seen swimming in a local bay, and it had shaken itself over people.

Dogs had fouled streets and upturned rubbish tins in the borough and, in view of recent sheep killings, it was obvious that a hungry dog had no conscience, the writer said. On the motion of Cr E. A. Camfield, seconded by Gr J. L. Baines, it was decided to refer the matter to the council’s bylaws committee for investigation.
