Fellowships Awarded To Scientists
(N.Z, Press Association—Copyright) WELLINGTON, March 10. Six senior and post-doctoral fellowships have been awarded to bring distinguished overseas scientists to New Zealand to work during 1969, the Minister of Science (Mr Taiboys) announced today.
The fellowships have been awarded on the recommendation of the National Research Advisory Council. Mr Taiboys said the senior fellowships were designed to attract experienced scientists to work in New Zealand for periods of up to a year. The post-doctoral fellowships were intended for young, wellqualified recent graduates. Two of the fellows, Professor W. E. Yates, and Mr P. K. C. Austwick, will work for the Department of Agriculture.
Dr W. A. Laycock will work for the New Zealand Forest Service. Dr P. H. Sutter, Dr P. H. Raven and Mr P. Konig will work for the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. Aviation Expert Professor Yates, an American, will be a senior fellow at the New Zealand Agricultural Engineering Institute, Lincoln College. He is an expert on agricultural aviation who has specialised in the aerial application of insecticides, fungicides, herbicides and fertiliser. Mr Austwick, a British mycologist, will work at the Ruakura Agricultural Research Centre as a senior fellow. He has earned a world-wide reputation for his surveys and investigations on mycotic diseases of farm animals.
Dr Laycock, an American plant ecologist, is at present at the Intermountain Forest and Range experiment Station Logan, Utah. He will be attached to the Forest and Range Experiment Station, Rangiora, as a senior fellow. He is an ecologist with experience of soil science and
meteorology and has specialised experience in the quantitative assessment of range conditions.
Dr Sutter, an American, will take up a senior fellowship at the Physics and Engineering Laboratory, Gracefield. Dr Sutter’s work will deal with the general field of solid-state physics and materials science, which has wide implications for ail sections of New Zealand industry. Reputation Dr Raven an American, has an outstanding international reputation as a botanist. He will take up a senior fellowship in Christchurch. Dr Konig, at present at the Zurich University, Switzerland, will take up a postdoctoral fellowship in Wellington. Dr Konig is a mathematician and an economist. In New Zealand he will concentrate on operational research for the transport Industry.
