Aquarelle Favoured In Cup At New Plymouth
“The Press” Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH. Aquarelle should go close to winning the Caltex Gold Cup at New Plymouth today. The mare will be ridden by G. L. Willetts, who rode her into second place behind Hagen’s Pleasure at Rawer a last month. In her next start she was just beaten by Fair Koral in the Rangitikei Cup. The 11-furlong race has drawn a strong field, with a fair percentage of northern horses engaged. They include Arbroath and Johnny Cash. Arbroath does not seem to be able to manage a win but he keeps running good races. He races handy and his good draw on this turning course must be in his favour. Johnny Cash failed in the Ohinemurl Cup on Saturday, but he was third at both Rotorua and Te Aroha recently and is well seasoned to run a good 11 furlongs. Chapel Belle will be well in favour after her fine third at Woodville last month. She has thrived since. • Hagen's Pleasure, which won well at Hawera last month, should go well and the best of the others may be Whakamoa, Pell Mell and Mac s Pride. SKOND LEG Second Cast, which won impressively at Hawera last week, is fancied in the Boron Two Thousand, but the improving light-weight, E Timi, might test her. E Timi won at Ellerslie at New Year and a good run for fourth at Pukekohe last week augurs well for his chance.
Heather Dale, which won twice at Gisborne, has stronger opposition this time, but her prospects cannot be ignored. Although Tipperary Gold has not raced since Trentham in January, she comes up well fresh and is entitled to strong ground would suit the improving General Myth, while a very soft track would help Regal Ling, which is fresh after a spell.
