Broken Leather Did Not Stop Win

B. Waerea was applauded after the Ngaio High-weight at Trentham on Saturday for riding Rahpete to victory under difficulties..

.. .Waerea broke a stirrup leather a furlong from the post, but managed to ride the Woodville gelding out strongly 'enough to get the better of Gymkhana, whidh had been the pacemaker. Rahpete had earned this win after a placed run in one of the high-weights at the Wellington Cup meeting. He is trained at Woodville by E. Ropiha, who plans to' bring some members of his strong team south for Easter racing at Riccarton. The favourite, Pualeilani, improved several places from the home turp for her third behind Rahpete and Gymkhana.

Tru<e Allen was the most impressive of the others. He was pushed back through the field from a trailing position early in the race, and was left with an impossible task in the .last half mile. He finished fifth.

Paper Lord, one of the biggest horses in the field, and a winner at Te Rapa at his previous .start, resisted a dogged late challenge from Ina Court for a narrow win in the Tinakorl Hack Handicap.

Ina Court came through the race with most of the honours; she started 18 wide and was slow away.
