SALUTING OF ‘FLAG’
College Prank At Plymouth (N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) PLYMOUTH, March 7. Officers and men lining the decks of five Belgian minesweepers found themselves saluting a pair of women’s panties when they sailed into Plymouth yesterday. British officers forming a welcome committee at Naval Headquarters suddenly noticed what was flying in place of the N.A.T.O. flag, and sounded action stations. A naval rating scurried to the command flag mast, and hauled down the panties. Pinned to the pole was a clue to the mystery—a note from Plymouth college students demanding that a “ransom” be paid to a local charity. The Navy quickly paid up £2 9s 6d, got their N.A.T.O. flag back, and ran it up. A Navy officer said it was rather difficult explaining the joke to the Belgians.
