Moore Wins Match Race At Speedway

IL Moore, in his farewell appearance for the season at the Templeton Speedway on Saturday night, convincingly beat the reigning world champion, I. Mauger, in a feature three-race match.

Moore is shortly to leave for his return to the European speedway circuit, which he has not ridden in for a number of years, and. if his local successes this season can be used as an indication, he will still be a leading contender for the world championship, a title he won in 1954 and 1959.

Moore twice passed Mauger on the last bend to win his races but Mauger gained some prestige when he held on to an early lead to win the second encounter. In the final race, each rider having a win each, Moore recorded the fastest time of the match. 78 seconds, and won on the inside of the track by 15 yards. Although most of the interest was concerned with the two motor-cyclists, several good individual performances, several spills and several close finishes made the evening an interesting one for the spectators.

D. Jones scored a run-away victory in the feature T.Q. scratch race and further increased his already big points lead in the South Island championship. This race demanded three starts as the duels on the first bend caused spectacular crashes the first two times the cars went away. P. Annan had two wins in the super-modified rod section and is now only one point behind D. Cameron in the South Island championship. A Dresentation was made to Moore and R. Wright and best wishes were conveyed to both by the Templeton club and the appreciative crowd.
