Women’s Softball Cup To Wellington Team
, ”7 he Press” Special Service ; AUCKLAND. The Wellington team, Broadway, won the Dbstin Cup, the trophy for the top women’s softball club team, for the second time when the final was played in Auckland yesterday. It overwhelmed the morefavoured combination, Leopards (Hawke’s Bay), 14-0. The Christchurch clu<b, Richmond. lost to Leopards in a play-nff for the final. Richmond had beaten the Hawke’s Bay team in the elimination rounds. The Richmond pitcher-arid-batcher combination, Y. Holton and M. Rush, played well in this game, Holton giving her best performance for some time. Rush scored first from a drive by E. Roaaley and fielding errors allowed two more batters home before another run was scored from t a good hit by P. Turner. Leopards tried hard but tight fielding from the Richmond side allowed only one rpn, in the fifth. This win made Richmond, Leopards and Broadway equal,
and a play-off between two of the teams was necessary. Broadway drew the bye and the second game between Richmond and Leopards was one of fluctuating fortunes.
■ The game was tied at five-all after seven innings and in the first extra innings a big hit by G. Thompson. of Leopards, brought in two runs. Richmond fought back to score the equalising runs. In the next extra Leopards gained five runs, ensuring a place in the final. In another exciting match. Monowai (Christchurch) defeated Eden Roskill (Auckland). 11-7. Monowai scored in the first but it was not until the fourth that it gained any advantage.
