Endeavour To Try Again
H.M.N.Z.S. Endeavour will leave Lyttelton at 1 p.m. today for Antipodes Island for the sixth attempt to take off the University of Canterbury scientific party 7 which has been there since late in January.
The forecast is for strong to gale force westerlies with, heavy seas. This will not permit anchorage and so the ship will lie off the island to await an improvement. A spokesman in the Endeavour said yesterday that food stocks used by the scientists on the island had been consumed more rapidly than was originally estimated. AU scientific work had been completed. The spokesman said it was known that idle days of wait-
ing could be demoralising. It was hoped that the presence of the ship off the island might help to keep up the morale of the party. Any opportunity which presented itself to get the party off would be taken immediately, he said. If the food supply on the island ran out, it is expected that the Endeavour would use a raft to get more to the scientists. Failing that the Royal New Zealand Air Force might be called to drop supplies. Last week the Endeavour made five attempts to get the scientists off the island but were prevented by heavy seas.
