UNIVERSITY VACANCIES THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF ADVANCED STUDIES DEPARTMENT OF PACIFIC HISTORY Applications are invited for three appointments in the Department of Pacific History; one as Senior Fellow or Fellow and two as Research Fellows. The Department undertakes studies in both history and government. Geographically, its research interests are centred upon the Pacific Islands and South-East Asia (principally Malaysia and Indonesia). Thematically, they are concerned with the study of situations involving contact between Western and non-Western societies. These include the study of the activities of Western agencies (political, economic and social), of internal change within the non-Western societies (i.e. ethnohistory), and of the contemporary politics of emergent states. In respect of at least one of these vacancies an applicant is sought with research experience in the history of Indonesia or Malaysia or in contemporary political studies relating to either or both of these areas. For the remaining two posts an applicant with qualifications in any part of the Department’s field of interest would be considered. The salary of a Senior Fellow is determined within the range $A8750-$A10,274, and of a Fellow within the range $A6400-$A8740, the initial salary being dependent on qualifications and ability. Fellows and Senior Fellows are appointed for an initial period of five years, after which they are normally reappointed until retiring age. A Senior Fellow is entitled to one year’s study leave on full pay, plus a contribution towards travel and other expenses, in every six years of service, and a Fellow in every seven years. The salary of a Research Fellow is determined within the range $A5400-$A7250, the initial salary being similarly dependent on qualifications and experience. Appointment is for three years, with possible extension to a maximum of five years. Superannuation is on the F.S.S.U. pattern, with supplementary benefits.
