Shaw Gives Evidence
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW ORLEANS, Feb. 28. Clay Shaw, accused of conspiring to assassinate President John F. Kennedy, gave evidence yesterday that he had never taken part in any plot to kill the President. Shaw, aged 55, white-haired and distinguished, and a former manager of the New Orleans trade mart, gave evidence on his own behalf as the defence wound up its case.
Questioned by his chief lawyer, Mr Irvin Dymond, Shaw told the jury that he had never plotted to assassinate or harm President Kennedy in any way, and in fact had been a supporter of the late President. The New Orleans District Attorney (Mr Jim Garrison) has charged that Shaw, Lee Harvey Oswald, and David Ferrie conspired in September, 1963, to assassinate the President. Dressed in a conservative grey business suit, and looking straight at the jury as he spoke, Shaw methodically denied all points of the charges against him during two hours of evidence, before the defence closed its case. As soon as the State's witnesses in rebuttal are heard, concluding arguments will be made, and the case can then go to the jury.
