Bishopric For Cricketer

(N.Z.P A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, Feb. 24.

The Rev. David Sheppard, the former England test cricketer, has been appointed Suffragan Bishop of Woolwich, at the age of 40. His appointment to one of the senior posts in the Church of England required Queen Elizabeth’s approval. For the last 11 years, Mr Sheppard has been running the Mayflower Family Centre, a pioneering social-religious venture in London’s East End. He retains a keen interest in cricket and spearheaded the opposition to the abandoned M.C.C. tour of South Africa last year, and the campaign to stop the South Africans being invited to play in England.
