The resignation of the head of the philosophy department (Professor J. M. Shorter) was accepted with regret at Monday’s meeting of the University of Canterbury Council. The council was told that Professor Shorter had been elected to a fellowship at Lincoln College, Oxford, and was the second holder of the chair at Canterbury to take up a fellowship at Oxford. The council also accepted the resignation of Dr R. Ziedins, senior lecturer in philosophy. Professor Shorter’s resignation will take effect from a date to be arranged and that of Dr Ziedins, from August 31. The appointment of Mr B.' A. Woods, lecturer in mathematics at the University of Leeds, to the second chair of mathematics, was approved, as well as the following additional appointments:
Senior Lecturer in Physii Dr K. Zdansky, lecturer in physics, Institute of Radio Engineering and Electronics, Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, Prague. Lecturer in Botany: Dr R. H, Mepham, Research Fellow, Botany Department, University of Southampton.
Lecturer in Education: Mr B. F. Tuck, Vocational guidance officer, Department of Education, Auckland. Lecturer in English: Miss Helen B. Debenham, research student. University of Sussex. Lecturer in Physics: Dr J. A. Campbell, formerly Ph.D. student, Queen Mary College, University of London. Assistant Lecturer in Geology: Mrs J. K. Campbell, temporary assistant lecturer, University of Canuterbury. Assistant Lecturer in Philosophy: Mr M. Acock, M.A., student, Indiana University. The resignation of Dr D. G. Lander, lecturer in psychology, was also accepted.
The council’s executive committee reported accepting resignations from Dr K. M. Yao, senior lecturer, civil engineering department; Dr R. Seddon, senior education lecturer; Mr J. C. Clift, assistant director, Department of Extension Studies and Dr S. A. Douglass, senior lecturer in mathematics.
Tax Claim.— Just before the luncheon adjournment in the Supreme Court at Wellington on Monday Bryan James Todd, managing director of Europa Oil (N.Z.), Ltd, completed four days and a half in the witness box. He testified in the case stated to the Commissioner of- Inland Revenue in a claim for s9m for amended tax assessments against Europa Oil (NZ.), Ltd, and its subsidiary, Associated Motorists Petrol Company (N.Z.), Ltd.—(P.A.).
