WAIKATO STRONG IN ROWING

(New Zealand Press Association) WANGANUI. In perfect conditions, the first 51 elimination races of the New Zealand championship regatta were rowed off on the Aramoho 2000-metre course yesterday.

The best display was given by the Waikato junior eight which rowed faultlessly to win its heat, easily defeating Tauranga and Aramoho. North Island crews dornin-] ated the races, the Waikato club top-scoring with eight, heat wins—youths fours, novice eights, junior singles, light-weight fours, -maiden coxed pairs, novice fours (2) and junior eights. With these wins, Waikato has shown the great strength the club has this season. It is one of the major contenders for the coveted Centennial Oar for the club scoring the most points in all events of the championships, on a 5,3, 1 basis. Aramoho, which has more crews entered than any other club in the country and Whakatane each won five heats. Of the South Island crews. Blenheim shone through its; novices. Two of its fours have qualified and the eight J won its heat easily. Results:—
