NELSON MONEY

City To Print Own The cheapest money in New Zealand will be on sale in Nelson soon in a novel scheme to attract more tourists to the province in the off-season.

Nelsonians are printing their own money for sale to visitors at 95c, giving them a 5 per cent discount on purchases.

The “tourist currency” project was begun by Nelson Jaycees and will be launched on Saturday by the city’s public relations organisation. Sanction for the idea has been given by the Reserve Bank and copyright protection has also been obtained. Since the tourist dollars are currency, strict precautions had to be observed while the money was printed, and police stood by. The gaily-printed currency will be for the exclusive use of visitors annually between May 1 and October 31, starting this year. It wll be negotiable at all commercial establishments in the city and throughout the district displaying the “Tourist Dollar” sign.

Design of the currency will be changed every year. As part of promotion of the scheme, the organisation also plans to “raid” Christchurch and Wellington. The raiders, dressed in the seaman’s garb of Lord Nelson’s day, will distribute thousands of “specimen” notes, hundreds of posters and many boxes of Nelson apples in each centre.
