West Holds 2nd Place
Christchurch West retained its second placing in the women’s inter-club softball competition on Saturday when it comfortably beat Spreydon, 13-4. The first innings was indecisive but on the second West scored eight runs. Monowai had too much drive and experience for its second grade side, winning 15-0. West v. Spreydon Christchurch West, three up, three down in its first innings,’ opened its scoring in the second when, with errors in the field, and hits by P. Hollands, L. Cameron, J. Patterson and a thru-bagger by K. Norman, brought in eight runs. With two batters out in its third. West's L. Cameron and .1. Patterson batted well for Cameron to score. Scoreless in its fourth, G. Bowver brought in two runs from a thru-bagger and later scored on a hit by IK. Norman in the fifth. D. La Grose, with fast running, earned West's only run in the sixth. The side was three up, [three down in the last. I Spreydon, scoreless in its first, | opened in the second when B. Clark, after hitting on, stole 'to second, advanced to third on a hit by H. Moana, and iscorcd a fielder's choice. A [double play between A. Borlese and I. Jones ended the innings. Spreydon’s H. Moana. attempting to steal home, suffered a broken ankle.
■ Spreydon was scoreless in its third, but good batting by S. [Marsh. H. Tobeck and A. Caddie ;enabled it to score two runs in the fourth. A. White, after i hitting on, scored a hit by S. Pateman in the fifth. Spreydon failed to add to its score in its last two innings because of good j fielding. i Monowai y. Monowai 2A Monowai’s opening batter was dismissed with a fine catch Iby V. Closey, but the team scored two runs from good hits by C. Brown and N. Beale. Three | up, three down in the second, i Monowai applied more pressure I in the third innings and scored I five runs. Monowai was scoreless in the fourth, but attacked strongly in the fifth to score 'seven runs.
i Monowai second grade A failed to master the pitching of B. Makinson and only S. Stead and R. Phillips hit safely during the game. The only other runner - to make base safely was M. Weakley on an error. Other results:—
