Average Wool Price Up 6 1 /2C

WELLINGTON, February 23. Up to mid-February the season’s average price for greasy wool was up 6|c per lb, compared with the same period last season, the Wool Commission reported today.
The comparison was affected by devaluation, but average prices at the more recent sales could be validly compared with those of a year ago, said the commission.
The figures showed an increase of between 5c and 6c per lb up to the Napier sale, l and then a reduction in the margin until the latest sale at Christchurch showed a rise of | only 2.3 c over the price a year ago. The commission listed the. following comparative prices:;
The volume of wool sold was up 1 per cent, compared with the same period last season, excluding sales from the commission’s stocks. The Wool Commission said that exports continued to increase, and for the six months from July to December, 1968, totalled 735,887 bales, compared with 525,364 bales in the corresponding period of 1967. These figures included wool sold from the commission's stock.
