SATURDAY TRADING
‘Disruptive, Of Little Value’ (NZ. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 21. Saturday trading would be of little value and he could not envisage it being intro, duced in New Zealand in the foreseeable future, the president of the Federation of Labour (Mr T. E. Skinner) said today. He said some talked as though Saturday trading would bring a big increase in retail turnover. There had been a substantial increase in retail turnover in the last six months and there was only a certain sum to go around and a certain amount of goods to be bought. The New Zealand housewife was conditioned to shopping on Thursday or Friday night and purchased groceries and household goods during the week. Refrigeration had meant that it was no longer necessary to shop on a daily basis. Saturday trading would completely disrupt the accepted concept of the weekend, with its exodus to beaches and resorts and sport. Any Saturday work would have to be done at penal rates, and be doubted that this would be economic for most retailers.
