Locomotives

The Engines That Passed. By C. Hamilton Ellis. Allen and Unwin. 133 pp. Mr Ellis has written and illustrated with his own faithful line drawings another book of reminiscences about locomotives. Most of the impressions he records were obtained over 40 years ago in the golden days of steam. There are some pleasant anecdotes about the minor railways of Austria and Sweden, and Mr Ellis has an eye for those veteran locomotives unrebujlt for years longer than their builders expected. This is really a coffee-table book, for the over 40s with plenty of spare money; there is not enough detail to help the model builder or the historian and Mr Ellis will only strike a chord in those who, like him, knew the European railways before the Second World War.
