Chatham Islands Crayfishing

Sir,—lt is with grave concern that the undersigned read of the factory ship Hotunui’s arrival at Chatham Islands to carry on business as a floating factory. The attitude of the owners and crew of Hotunui is apparently one of open defiance to all existing regulations. The time has come for a showdown between the Marine Department and crayfishermen. We who are vitally concerned with the industry, view with alarm the general build-up of disregard to existing regulations. The Minister of Marine must take definite action to see that all regulations are adhered too. Otherwise “open slather” will be the order of the day.—Yours, etc., S. J. W. GREGORY HUNT. February 6, 1969.
