Prices For Flock Rams Increase Sharply At Fair

There was strong evidence of a recovery in confidence in sheep when the Canterbury- flock ram fair opened at the Addington Show Grounds yesterday with the sale of mutton breeds.

The Dorset Down sale, in particular, was like a stud sale, the principal vendors averaging considerably more than $lOO a head. At $lO7, the average for the sale was almost three times that of last year.

For a small entry of South Suffolks the average was also more than double that for last year’s fair and in the South Dorset Down section the average was almost twice as much as last year.

The Southdown sale was very good, but though values improved about 70 per cent compared with last year, prices were still fairly modest, the average being not quite $43. The sale was nevertheless characterised by a steady and strong demand. So often at these fairs there is a procession of passings at auction, although a great many rams are subsequently sold by private treaty. But yesterday it was something of a stock agent’s dream, almost all the Southdowns being sold under the hammer. Only about eight rams were passed in an offering of 562. This was symptomatic of the general tone of the sale. Two years ago 54 per cent of the Southdown rams found a buyer under the hammer. Last rear there was an improvement. about 80 per cent going at auction. 70 Per Cent Better Yesterday the sale tended to strengthen as it went along. In the first run of the sale 291 rams were sold for an average of $4l. In the second session, when 263 were sold, the average rose to nearly $45. and over the whole • sale 554 were sold for almost $43. Last year for 591 sold out of a catalogued entry of more than 800 the average was just on $25, so this year’s sale of 554 from a catalogued entry of fewer than 600 represented an improvement in price of about 70 per cent. Surprisingly, the top price was not up to last year’s, although the general tone of the sale was so much better. One of the best sales at auction was nf a single ram from T. E. M. Brooks, of Brookside, which brought $75. For another single Mr Brooks received $7O and he had sales of pairs at $65 and $6O. Last year he received up to $lO5, but for the 24 Brookside rams selling yesterday from $42.50 to $75 average $53.50. compared with $35 for 32 a year ago. A sale completed after auction for a ram from J. A. Brown, of Oamaru. resulted in T. Weav-j ers. of Sefton, paying $BO. Mr Brown also had a pair which [ made $65 and this latter price | was also paid for two from D._ C. McMillan, of Irwell.

With 32 rams making from $45 to $65 D. C. McMillan averaged $53 for the day, compared with an average of almost $39 last year for 36. D. W. Sheat. or DunsandeL averaged nearly $52 with 15 selling from $42.50 to $62.50. Last year for 24 his average was $29.50.

For nine making from $4O to $65. and not including the sale completed after auction, J. A. Brown, of Oamaru, averaged $5O.

Averages of more than $49.50 were, recorded by J. S. Brooks, of Brookside, with 24 selling at $37.50 to $62.50. and by J. C. Medlicott and Son, of Waimate. with 11 making from $45 to $57.50. Last year Mr Brooks averaged $25 for 22.

C. McCaskey and Son, of Amberley, with 12 selling from $4O to $55. also averaged $4B. With 17 ranging from $42.50 to $52.50. A. Zuppicich, of Prebbleton. had an average of $47.

Some vendors had big lots. One of the largest was from G. A. Harrison, at Springbank, Rangiora. For 97 rams bringing $22.50 to $47.50 he averaged $35.50.

G. F. M. Sheat (Dunsandel), with 32 selling from $35 to $5O, averaged almost $44, the estate of .Tames Petrie and Sons averaged $43.50 for 42 selling from $37.50 to $5O, J. K. Fincham, of Hawarden. averaged better than $42.50 for 30 making from $32.50 to $5O. J. G. and D. A. Crawford (Oxford), averaged between $4l and $42 for 38 making from $25 to $55. and R. L. A. McMillan (Irwell) averaged about $40.50 for 27 ranging from $3O to $5O. The best of the Southdown rams sold from about $6O to $75, with good at $5O to $6O. average at $36 to $45, and others at $25 to $35. Poll Dorsets There was a limited inquiry for a small entry of Poll Dorset rams, but the realisation was better than last year’s. The offering of 23 came from one vendor. Newton Brothers, of Little River, and 14 were sold at auction for an average of $34. The top price was $4O. Last year, 13 of 27 Poll Dorset rams were sold at auction for an average of $25.60. South Dorset Downs South Dorset Down rams met a much improved sale on last year. This was mainly because of greater buying power but the much reduced offering was also a factor. The sale began weakly, but it soon picked up. Buyers sought sheep with size and length, and competition was gdod. Of the 140 rams offered, 127 were sold

at auction for an average of $47.50. This was almost twice as good as last year’s fair, when 214 of 284 rams averaged just under $25. The top price of the sale was also far ahead of last year s figure of $5O. Acting for a Feilding buyer, the National Mortgage and Agency Company paid $l7O for a single entry from Darenal Estates, of Amberley. All told, the same vendor sold I five rams from $42.50 to $l7O ' for an average of $97. The principal vendors in this | section. I. N. and M. N. Watson, i of Weedons, sold 35 rams from 537.50 to $55 for an average of $45.70. L. H. and C. R. W. Johnson, of Dunsandel, sold 11 at an average of $47.80, Mrs S. D. McMillan (Irwell), 11 averaging $45.80. and J. G. and D. A. Crawford (Oxford) 13 averaging $44. South Suffolks South Suffolk rams had an excellent sale. For venders, the realisations were in marked contrast to the nominal rates of last year’s fair. As in some other sections the entry was well down on last year—4o compared with 97. A complete clearance was made at auction for an average of $51.60, compared with a $25 average for 67 sold at auction last year. The top price was $BO. this being paid on two occasions—once at the outset of the sale for a single entry from W. M. Early (Montalto), and again for two rams from D. J. and J. Stewart, of Rakaia. The sale was supplied by three vendors only. For an entry of five selling from $7O to SSO, Messrs Stewart averaged $74. for 11 selling from $38.50 to $BO. Mr Early averaged $58.80, and for a consignment of 24, which sold from $35 to $47.50, A. C. Greenwood, of Southbridge, averaged $4B. Dorset Downs Dorset Down rams met a remarkable sale. As in some of the other heavy-breed sections, the entries were well down on last year—-only 27 compared with 56. AU of them were sold at auction, and the sales list looked more like a stud catalogue than a flock sale. At $lO7, the average was almost three times as much as last year’s average of $3B. Last year’s top price of $lOO was eclipsed several times, the top price yesterday being $320 for a single entrj’ from Darenal Estates, of Amberley, which may be a record.

A feature of this section, however, were the consignments from D. O. Masefield, and R. T. Masefield, of Akaroa. D. O. Masefield sold two at $l6O, another two at $l2O, and a single at $B5 for an average of $129.

The sales obtained by R. T. Masefield were even better. He sold single lots at $250. $220 i and $95. and two pens of two at $l2O and $B5. Grossing $975 his entry of seven averaged $139.50. The fair will end today with wool-breed rams.
