TENNIS UPSET
Emerson Beaten (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) PHILADELPHIA. The Puerto Rican, C. R. Pasarell, scored an upset victory over a leading Australian professional, in the first round of the Philadelphia open tennis tournament yesterday. Pasarell was in brilliant form with his driving and i volleying, and did not lose his service once when beating R. lA. Emerson, 6-3, 6-2. Emerson saved two match points in the second set at 1-5 in the best action of the match. The Australian took the game finally with an overhead cross-court smash, making the score 2-5, but lost the next game.
However, the professionals were too good for amateurs in most of the other encounters.

Smith (United 1 States) beat R. Russell (Jamaica), 6-4, 6-3; J. Newcombe (Australia) beat P. Curtis (Britain), 6-2, 5-7, 6-2: Pasarell beat Emerson, 6-3, 6-2; A. Roche (Australia) beat P. Segura (Ecuador), 6-4, 6-2; R. Laver (Australia) beat P. Barthes (France). '6-3. 6-1; P. Gonzales (United : States) beat T. Ulrich (Denmark). 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
