Mr Kai-Uwe von Hassel has been elected president of the West German Bundestag (Parliament). Mr von Hassel succeeds Mr Eugen Gerstenmaier, who resigned on January 23 under pressure of public criticism for collecting the equivalent of 5NZ62.700 in salary he said he lost under the Nazis. Mr von Hassel, who is 55 and is a former Minister of Defence and of Refugee Affairs, received 262 votes from the 457 deputies present, with 123 votes against him. 29 abstentions and 43 invalid ballots-.
