Leaving U.N. Committee

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) NEW YORK, February 4.

Australia has announced its withdrawal from the anti-colonial committee of 24 where she has been strongly criticised by Africans and Asians for alleged racist tendencies, the New York Times News Senice reports.

No official reason was given for the withdrawal in a letter sent to the Secre-tary-General (U Thant) last Tuesday and announced by the secretariat yesterday.

The Australian permanent representative (Mr Patrick Shaw) said in answer to questions this afternoon that he had no comment to make on their reasons except that “there was a need for change.”

Australia still has trusteeship obligations in New Guinea. Her reports, however, are made to the Trusteeship Council, rather than to the committee of 24.
