HELP OR INTERFERENCE? Dilemma Described In New Magazine

“Parents interested in their children’s education—or to put it more simply, parents who are interested in their children—want to help when their child starts school. But teachers dislike ‘interference.’ How can you decide where ‘help’ ends and ‘interference’ begins?” This quotation expressing the dilemma facing parents of school-age children comes from an article in the I first issue of “Learning,” a new journal on education intended specifically for parents. The article, and the journal, aim to help parents who want to take an active and useful part in their children’s education; who want to know more about what their c.hildren are learning and how they are being taught. The range of this new magazine is the whole of education, from early childhood to adult education, inside the classroom and outside it. The first issue, for example, has articles on these subjects: on helping children at home; on why parents must talk to their

richildren, on learning science 3 by the “discovery” method: sjon what art education is r about; bn bringing up a deaf ir child; on the practical effects tlof the 'teacher shortage; on .’ what the new .School Certifie cate means; on helping child- •’ ren to choose a career wisely: :- and on the choice of subjects g and courses available in our n universities. e Publication of “Learning”, a will begin in March. It will n be edited by Mrs Jenny r Gunby, who recently spent Two years with an English r-! organisation which produced s a journal with similar aims, e called “Where.” The pubr lishers of “Where” have o offered to make available any it material from their journal i- which is relevant or interestg ing to New Zealanders. But the greater part of “Learn.v ing’s” content will be articles if by New Zealand writers 1- about New Zealand schools i, and children. t- “Learning” will be pubir lished in Christchurch by The! ” Caxton Press. It will appear y four times during each school ir year.
