WOOL FIRM AT AUCKLAND
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, January 22. Competition was at times keen and prices were firm at the fifth Auckland wool sale of the season today.
The official report says that there was an offering of 27,883 bates which contained 30 per cent full-length ewe fleece, 35 per cent early shorn and second shear, 20 per cent lambs’ wool and the usual oddments.
It was only an average offering, which contained evidence of difficult feed conditions produced by adverse weather in the winter and spring. Many lines were tender and others cotted or inclined to be webby. Lambs’ wool generally was of good colour, length and yield. Continental houses were the principal buyers; there was good support from the United States. Japan bid on specialty lines and Bradford sparingly. Compared with the sale last week at Wanganui, the Auckland market remained very firm with good style lambs’ wool dearer.
There was practically a total clearance at auction with passings negligible. The Wool Commission did not have any wool on sale and did not have to buy any.
