Exchange Of Greetings
Greetings to Christchurch from Japan and Fiji were conveyed by scouts attending the jamboree at Kaiapoi last evening when they met the Deputy Mayor (Cr H. P. Smith). From the Mayor of the Japanese city of Kurashiki (Mr Shigeki Oyama) Cr Smith, acting for the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr A. R. Guthrey) received a scroll with a Japanese message of good will, which was transI lated by one of the Japanese contingent. • Cr Smith and his wife were
shown the Japanese part of the camp, and also the plans for the jamboree which will be held in Japan in 1971. From the Japanese camp Cr Smith went to the Fijian camp, where he was given a traditional welcome and took part in a kava-drinking ceremany before receiving a message of good will from the Mayor of Suva (Mr L. G. ’ Usher). * At both camps Cr Smith , made return gifts of books on Christchurch. i Nineteen scouts went on a [ two-day pony trek at Hanmer . Springs on Monday, and 24 , more will go today. The boys had their own tents and cooking equipment and spent the night in i the Styx Valley. Yesterday i some returned over Jollie’s Pass and others over Jack’s i Pass. ■ Back at Hanmer Springs 1 the boys groomed and fed their horses before having a ; swim in the hot pool and re- - turning to Kaiapoi by bus.
