A Broken River Bank
Sir,—Children in the area between Rochdale Street. Fendalton, and the flour mill in Deans Avenue are unable to use their boats on the Avon River during these holidays. Since last April the river bank has been broken and
water diverted to a useless bend below the mill, the race being gone. Mothers, anxious that their children keep busy, are also upset by this situation, Even beavers build a dam faster than those responsible for the necessary repairs to the Avon, —Yours, etc., REACTION.
January 1, 1969. [The secretary of the Christchurch Drainage Board (Mr T. A. Tucker) replies: “The board is concerned in this matter only to the extent that any restoration of the breached mill race will have on the river as a drainage channel. The board does not itself, and at its own cost, erect or maintain dams.”]
