(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) ALGIERS, Jan. 7. The former Algerian President, General Ahmed Ben Bella, who has been held by the Government since he was ousted from power in June, 1965, may be released shortly, according to well-informed Algerian sources. The detained general is said to have been visited on January 1 by his mother, who is 88, and his niece, who described him as being “very well and treated with all the honours of his rank.” Tbe first President of Algeria after its independence from France in 1962, General Ben Bella was overthrown on June 20, 1965. His fall involved political and personal disputes, and a split within the ruling faction between old guerrilla fighters and theorists like the general himself.
