Women’s Camp
A camp set up in a school is the temporary home of almost 200 women workers at the national scout jamboree, while others are staging in motels, camping at beaches, beside the Ashley River, or travelling to and from Christchurch. Mrs M. Millard, wife of the Canterbury Area Commissioner, a district cub leader and member of the national training team, is chief of the women’s camp. Most of the women are scouters, with some guide leaders, from as far afield as Northland, Southland, Australia, and Fiji. Classrooms, each containing 16 stretchers, are bedrooms. A quartermaster and two cooks provide a daily breakfast in the manual training block; other meals are taken at the jamboree. An Ashley district cub leader arrives daily to assist with cleaning. Surroundings are quiet and peaceful and the school’s swimming pool has been in constant use from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. by workers off duty.
