RACIALISM IN SPORT
Reply To Mr Newnham
The composition of South African tennis teams to compete in the Davis Cup was not discussed at either the 1967 meeting or the 1968 meeting of the International Lawn Tennis Federation, Mr A. C. Felton, immediate past-president of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, said yesterday. He was commenting on a statement in “ The Press ” in which the secretary of the Citizens’ Association for Racial Equality (Mr T. O. Newnham) said that, at the meeting of the federation in London, New Zealand used its considerable voting strength to deny non-white South African tennis players the right to participate in the Davis Cup. Instead, Mr Newnham said, New Zealand voted for the admission of a racist South African body which restricted its membership to white South Africans. “I have the minutes of the 1967 meeting and I attended the 1968 meeting and at neither meeting did this question arise,” Mr Felton said. Mr Felton invited Mr Newnham to quote his authority for the statement.
