MERGER OF BANKS

2000 May Lose Jobs (N.Z. Press Association) ADELAIDE, January 6. More than 2000 bank employees in Australia and New Zealand were expected to be out of work if six of Australia’s seven private banks continued with merger plans, the South Australian president of the Australian Bank Officer's Association (Mr H. T. Becker) said today. Mr Becker said the mergers would mean a duplication of at least 737 bank branches in the two countries. It was fair to estimate that about three employees of each branch would be redundant which would mean a surplus of about 2200 bank employees.
