Gonorrhoea In U.S.

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, Jan. 6.j An estimated one million! and a half persons in the! United States were treated for, gonorrhoea in 12 months—, and the disease is reaching, epidemic proportions, a na-| tional survey showed today. ! But there has been some; success in combating the more dangerous, but far less pre ! valent, syphilis. Both diseases are passed on through! sexual contact. From figures provided by tens of thousands of doctors! it was calculated that the num, ber of persons treated for between July, 1967, and June, 1968, was 1,499,584. In the same period, the number treated for syphilis was put at 75,207. Compared with a similar study six years ago, the inci-j dence of gonorrhoea was up 35.3 per cent, while syphilis] was down 29.3 per cent. The reason syphilis declined while gonorrhoea in-] ] creased was the recent emiphasis on fighting syphilis, ]said doctors involved in the i survey.
