'Final Fling’ By Drivers
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 4. The Minister of Transport (Mr Gordon) said in Auckland today that there was just as much drinking and driving over the holiday period as there had been in previous years.
“This indicates that all the publicity on breath testers hasn’t had any effect this Christmas,” he said. It was in the nature of “a last fling” for motorists before breath tests became compulsory. He said those motorists who had consented to blood tests had shown high blood counts —several about 200 milligrams of alcohol to 100 millitres of blood.
The level provided for in the Transport Amendment Act for conviction for drunken driving is 100 milligrams per 100 millilitres. Tenders for breath testers would not close for some days. One hundred units of the most acceptable tender would be tested, possibly in the Scientific and Industrial Research Department’s four main laboratories.
Once they proved capable; of meeting New Zealand’s “very high standard,” the manufacturer could go ahead with a bulk order of at least 30,000.
No indication could be given of when the testers would be here.
“We will consider flying the first batch here,” said Mr Gordon.
