N.Z. Yacht Battered

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, January 5. Huge seas have caused about $3OOO damage to the New Zealand 32ft sloop Roiaata since it left Auckland eight months ago, the skipper, N. Gillard, said today. The tiny yacht was one of a record 13 craft forced .to withdraw from the Sydney to Hobart yacht race. The Roiaata was battered on her port side by a wave which shattered seven of the yacht’s seams on December 29 while fighting a hard southerly about 30 miles south-east of Gabo Island, during the 640-mile race. Gillard said the yacht was forced to retire because of the water it was taking and make for Eden, a southern New South Wales fishing port, where they completed repairs. The yacht arrived in Sydney yesterday.
